We Care Filmfest 2011

To promote the upcoming We Care filmfest-2011, we will start screening of award winning films of the last film festivals and will organize “Media and Disability workshops” in various Mass Communication, Journalism and film making institutes across the NCR.  We are planning to cover about 10 – 15 such institutes.

Apart from the above, we will also organize similar workshops in other states for students of Mass Communication, Journalism and filmmaking from August to November 2010 in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. We have identified some institutes.

Since 2001 BROTHERHOOD is associated with various workshops on MEDIA AND DISABILITY being organized by the Rehabilitation council of India (RCI) and Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicap (AYJ NIHH) (both Statutory bodies of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) across the country.  The purpose is to advocate for better policies when it comes to media representation of disability issues.

We have been organizing workshops for working journalists as well as journalism students across the country.  These workshops have been held in Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Chennai, Shimla, Shillong, Srinagar, Aurangabad and Tezpur in Assam etc. on the following issues:

  • Portrayal of disability in Indian cinema
  • Appropriate terminology
  • Screening of award winning films of the last We Care Filmfest-2008
  • Promotion of upcoming film festival
  • Issues and trends related to disability etc.

Needless to say, we want to provide an opportunity to all the students to develop their understanding and perspective relating to disability issues which will support them to make short films and documentaries with great sensitivity.

During the last film festival, we received about 10 films and documentaries from students (out of 48) which was the result of the “Media and Disability workshops” we had organized.

Participatory rating process

While an independent jury will adjudge the films, we would invite students of Mass Communication and Journalism to be part of a participatory rating process which would give alternative opinion on the quality and content of these films.  We would be developing a criteria which would be given to the students during the three-day festival.  In addition, the students can also come up with their own rating criteria with respect to the quality, content and treatment in these films.
